The room was filled with women executives in all aspects of healthcare. We all walked away with tangible and actionable ideas and skills. Many immediately raised their rates, some discussed up and coming difficult negotiations that they now felt more confident with and all of us left feeling stronger.
Vickie is direct, joyful, strong and fearless. It also reminds me of what we mediators tell ourselves when we spend 4 or 8 or 15 hours helping the parties to litigation settle the darn thing without IMMEDIATE success. "It's a process," we say. "What the parties heard and said and worried about today will effect their negotiations tomorrow." "It's out of my hands," we say, "we give our best to the process and let go of the result"

Liz learned that which we remind ourselves as often as we can. We learn, We practice. We forget. And then . . . later, sometimes much later . . . the transformation occurs. We ask instead of hectoring. We stop feeling like a victim at someone else's mercy and probe for the fear in our negotiation partner that expresses itself in disapproval and back-peddling. We feel we have achieved something important even when it's not the thing we've asked for - more money, a promotion, the support of our family in trying a new career.

The "win" is powerful but it is internal first. We step up to the plate. We take charge. We're senior to the situation. We're respectful or our bargaining partner and s/he becomes more respectful of us.

This is why, against all expectations, a course in negotiation can and does literally transform lives. Do yourself a favor in the new year and sign up for our signature course.

And thanks to Liz for sharing!

Sierra Tyler comments on Teaching a Girl to Fish Means Reclaiming Your Inner Bitch

journey ON, journeywomen!!!! very inspiring article and motivating me personally to not keep quiet... i have found my voice and will roar to my hearts content :)
